| Kuchen in the Erzgebirge Christmas vacations were long, and the occasion for the yearly ski trip to Austria. On our way to Salzburg we passed through what was known as the Erzgebirge in southern Germany, at a time when Christmas markets were set up all over the small towns. Rows of canvas covered wooden stalls displayed a multitude of brightly colored hand made wooden toys, ornaments, candlesticks, angels, and mangers in every size and finish. Santas and Nutcrackers were our favorite choices. Somehow it always seemed to snow, dry snow, kind of creaky when walked on, and hot chocolate and lebkuchen were served everywhere. It was like traveling back in time. People were friendly and everybody kept saying "Grüss Gott" in German, like our "God Bless". We loved it and displayed the larger Nutcrackers under the tree, while the smaller ones had to crack some tough nuts. |
